Paris Saint Germain are through to the semi-final of the Champions League after knocking out holders Bayern Munich on away goals.
Bayern were 1-0 winners on Tuesday night at the Parc des Princes, but Eric Maxim Choupo Moting’s goal was not enough as they crashed out on away goals (3-3 on aggregate).
The Bavarians’s boss Hansi Flick was wary of the fact that his side needed to be more clinical after falling short of a victory in the reverse fixture, despite having 31 attempts at goal.
The game started on a high, with Bayern pressing for the lead right from the start but it was PSG who looked the more threatening going forward.
Neymar in particular looked like he was in the mood to hurt the Bayern defence but was guilty of missing some gilt-edged chances as he struck the woodwork twice in the first half.
The Brazilian initially forced a great save from Manuel Neuer after receiving a pull back from Mbappe and minutes later, saw his shot come off the bar after brilliantly cutting back inside to create some space.
It just didn’t happen for Neymar in the first half as he once again hit the post, this time finding the foot of the goal after being played in by Mbappe.
Against the run of play in the last 15 minutes of the first half, Bayern sparked the contest back to life as they found an opener courtesy of their cult hero Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who rose above Presnel Kimpembe to head home from two yards out.
At half time, the aggregate score stood at 3-3, with Bayern still needing one goal to progress.
Bayern had an early chance in the second period as David Alaba, who is set to leave the German giants in the summer, pulled his effort wide after Leroy Sane tried to find Choupo Moting in vain.
Neymar nearly got in again at the hour mark but failed to connect with a brilliant Di Maria cross as both sides continued to go at each other with half chances.
Despite holding on for their Champions League future, PSG were thoroughly comfortable on the ball and thought they had found their cushion when Kylian Mbappe stormed through from the halfway line to beat Manuel Neuer with a thumping finish, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.
The assistant raised his flag as he deemed the World Cup winner to have started his run too early.
Despite a late surge by Bayern, some resolute defending from the French Champions ensured the game ended 1-0 to send the current holders home on away goals.
PSG will now face either Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund in the semi final.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Real Madrid have announced that team captain Sergio Ramos has tested positive for Covid-19 barely 24 hours before their Champions League second-leg clash with Liverpool. 4
The defender was sidelined with an injury he picked up during the last FIFA break and was not expected to return to the squad in the next few days.
He will now spend some more time away from the team as he recovers from Covid-19. Raphael Varane also tested positive a week ago and is still not able to return to the team.
