Northerners are not being killed in Nigeria. This is the message of Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, in response to a claim by Bello Mohammed Matawalle.
The Zamfara state governor alleged that northerners were being killed in the southern part of the country. The governor had called for the act to stop in other to prevent a reprisal attack in the north.
According to Adams, the statement by the governor is unethical and unfortunate. He consequently called on leaders from the north to call him to order.
Adams made his mind over the development known when he spoke with the Nigerian Tribune.
The Yoruba leader insisted that there was no time northerners were attacked in the southwest. He said in cases where they are even apprehended for crimes, they will be handed to the police.
His statement read in part:
“Well, I think the governor should know that we the Southerners especially the South-Westerners have never attacked the northerners in our region, we have never attacked northerners in our region.
“The Northerners that are doing their legitimate businesses are free to run their businesses here in the South-West, nobody will attack any person that is not a criminal in the South-West, even the criminal must not even be attacked in the South-West, we hand them over to the police. So I don’t know where the governor is getting the information from."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that a lawmaker representing Katsina North senatorial district at the Senate, Ahmad Babba Kaita, has called for an immediate halt to the attacks on northerners in the southern part of the country.
Kaita, who is from the same senatorial district as President Muhammadu Buhari, said like southerners, northerners should be allowed to live and carry out their businesses in the south in line with the country’s constitution.
Legit.ng gathered that Governor of Zamfara state Bello Matawalle had warned that southerners living in the north should not expect protection if the killing of northerners continued in the South.
Legit.ng had previously reported that Matawalle described the protests against the medical vacation of President Buhari in London, United Kingdom, as an attack on northern Nigeria.
It was reported that some Nigerians led by a former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, have been protesting in London against the president’s trip.
The governor asked northern leaders to speak out against the protests, adding that they should not be ashamed of defending their people and protecting their interests.
