The Manchester side were a little unlucky not to go ahead earlier in the first half after Edinson Cavani had his goal controversially disallowed by VAR after Scott McTominay was adjudged to have fouled Heung-Min Son in the build up to the goal.
United had previously gone close in the 17th minute through Marcus Rashford who stormed into the area to smack a shot that deflected behind off the sliding Eric Died.
Cavani's disallowed goal in the 34th minute looked like the deadlock breaker, only for VAR to chalk it off.
Son went on to hand Spurs the lead minutes later, with the Korean beating Dean Henderson with a close-range effort to ensure the hosts head into the break the better side.
Brazilian star Fred drew the visitors' level in the 57th minute, pouncing on a rebound to find the back of the net moments after Hugo Lloris had denied Cavani.

Cavani completed United's thrilling comeback 11 minutes to time with a spectacular finish, slamming home a header to find Mason Greenwood's flying cross.
However, the Uruguayan handed his own team a scare in the dying minutes of the matches after he hit his own post as he stretched desperately to defend Spurs' corner.
Greenwood, who came on as a substitute put the game to bed at stoppage time to inspire Ole's men to a crucial victory.
The win saw them narrow the gap between them and leaders Man City to 11 points with another game in hand.

The 24-year-old has now scored six goals in his last five EPL games for the Foxes while his tally in all competitions so far stands at 12 goals and five assists.
Iheanacho grabbed his first goal of the game in the 70th minute through a stunning shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.
