Nigerian celebrities - especially those in the music and movie industry - were among those who quickly embraced the use of social media after it gained ground in Africa.
Many of them had flooded social media platforms like My Space, Facebook, etc that all gained popularity around the early 2000s.

However, apart from socialising on the platform, it quickly became an avenue for celebrities to spread the gospel about their crafts and also connect with fans and others interested in their works.
The likes of Dbanj, 2baba, Don Jazzy, Funke Akindele, Omotola Jalade were on some of the trending social media platforms and they had impressive followings. It was an avenue to share updates about their latest projects, catch up with fans and also show off bits and pieces of their personal life.
Unfortunately, it took a while for colleagues in the not-so-mainstream part of the music industry to catch up with the wave of social media. Even when they got on board, the content on their pages didn't match up with their hip-hop counterparts.
