Onyi Moss: The Nigerian creative telling beautiful stories
Once a financial account that prepared financial statements, Onyi Moss is now a full time creative and independent artist. She left her well-paid finance role, a job that took her many months to acquire, for a life of uncertainty to pursue a career as a self-taught photographer.
Determined to make it in her new field, she put a plan in motion that has since led her to be recognised for her work in the creative industry. During her period of unemployment, she took a bold step and purchased a camera using her rent money after watching a TV show that showcased women photographers and their work. In doing so, she decided to teach herself photography by watching YouTube tutorials and practising every chance she could. Even when she eventually found a job in finance, she carried on with it. This sometimes meant staying up late and dedicating her weekends to her newfound passion.
As she began sharing her work on social media, some brands started to notice her. It didn’t take long for the offers of paid work to begin flooding in. Something she struggled to manage alongside her full-time role as a financial accountant. Eventually, she made the decision to quit and take a chance on her passion, giving herself six months to settle in, if not, she’d return to her career in finance. But thankfully, she never had to resort to the latter as worked picked up for her. Brands paid her to create editorial content for them such as the ones displayed on her Instagram page. In order to stand out from the rest of her peers in what is now a very saturated industry, she focused on storytelling using beautiful imagery. Something the brands she worked with wanted for themselves too as they paid her to create stories to market their products on social media.
Her work led her to win awards such as Cosmopolitan 2019 Fashion Influencer of the Year, Northern Blog Awards 2018 Content Creator of the Year and Northern Blog Awards 2018 Best Fashion & Style Creator. Number 10 Downing Street was also paying attention as she got invited to celebrate Black History Month there in 2019. An event she describes as a milestone in her career.
It’s been nearly four years since Onyi Moss left her role in finance, and she’s been able to command the attention of big-name brands who continue to work with her. Her client list includes brands such as Carolina Herrera, Pandora, Sky TV, Giorgio Armani, Viktor & Rolf, St-Germain, Fujifilm and Motorola to name a few. She attributes her success to incorporating her love for life into her work. This allows her to truly immerse herself in her work. Practising remains her best teacher as she puts it. She continues to seek ways in which to improve her skills and encourages other creatives to tell their stories too.
