Goodnews as FG Gives very Important Update on NIN-SIM Linkage

- Many Nigerians can heave a sigh of relief over their NIN-SIM linkage as it has once again been extended

- The deadline which had been set for April 6, 2021, has now been shifted to May 6, 2021

- President Buhari was reported to have endorsed the extension after the request was presented to him

The deadline for linking Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) with valid National Identity Numbers (NIN) has once again been extended by the federal government.

Nigerians now have until May 6 to link their SIM with their NIN, which is a one-month extension period.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Kayode Adegoke.

In the statement which was shared on Friday, April 2, on the official Twitter handle of NIMC, it was disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari endorsed the extension.

Part of the statement read:

"The meeting took place on Thursday, April 1, 2021, and approval was given to extend the period of the NIN-SIM linkage to the 6th of May, 2021.
“The request for the extension was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari and he endorsed it.”

The announcement quickly sparked reactions. While some commended the move, others had complaints.

Mubarak with the Twitter handle @Mubarak69230059 commented:

"Dem no born Una we'll make Una no extend am. I don't know what it cost you guys to print out the plastic Id card immediately after capturing. Useless foes."

Fatima Abdullahi with the handle @FatimaA29304775 complained:

"Please try and put more manpower to register people. No single place in area one and many places. Do it like Electoral commission so as to register many people or use GLO, MTN and others to make it easy. Thanks."

It was earlier reported that the NIN registration process has achieved great progress as over 51 million people have been assigned NINs.

This was disclosed by the minister of communications and digital economy, Ali Isa Pantami, during a State House press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, April 1.

NIN-SIM linkage extended by eight weeks

Recall that Pantami, during the meeting of the Ministerial Taskforce on NIN-SIM registration which held on the 1st of February, 2021., disclosed that the exercise had been extended by eight weeks.

The deadline was scheduled for April 6, 2021.

The exercise when it started had been marred by different challenges like overcrowding and other logistics issues.

January 19 was the initial deadline, but it was moved to February 9, April 6 and now May 6.
