Man of His Words: Governor Wike Fulfils N10m Pledge to Artistes at Burna Boy’s Homecoming Despite Criticisms

On March 14, 2021, top Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, no doubt made the country and his people proud after his album, Twice As Tall, won a Grammy Award. He was also celebrated by Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike.
A homecoming that took place in Port Harcourt was organised for the singer where he was welcomed by the governor and other dignitaries as a large crowd gathered to celebrate him.
During the homecoming event, the governor of the state announced that he was very proud and vowed that all the artistes who performed at the occasion would receive N10 million each. He also gifted Burna Boy money as well as a piece of land.

The news of these lavish gifts did not go down well with many Nigerians as they accused the governor of owing salaries and more.
Despite the public outcry, the Rivers state government has gone ahead to fulfil its promise. In a press release by the state, it was revealed that the artistes who performed at Burna Boy’s event have now received their money as promised.
The statement which was signed by the commissioner for culture and tourism, Mrs Tonye Briggs, described the state governor, Nyesom Wike, as a man of his words for redeeming his pledge.

In other related news, Legit.ng earlier reported that a Nigerian writer, Uloma, took to Twitter to condemn the Rivers state government for the lavish gifts to artistes at Burna Boy’s Homecoming.
According to her, no citizen should be honoured with taxpayers’ money. She also extended her criticisms to Burna Boy and said that his politics only started and ended with his songs because he lacked the guts to challenge the system.
