Queens Behind the Scenes: Kemi Adetiba, 6 Other Female Directors Redefining Filmmaking in Nollywood

The Nigerian film industry has for many years, kept millions of movie lovers entertained, and is no doubt responsible for the fame and fortune of many celebrities today.

Interestingly, more women are getting involved in filmmaking and it isn't just in front of the screen.

Several years ago, female producers and directors weren't so many in the industry as the technical aspect of movie-making was mostly male-dominated.

However, a lot of things have changed about the film industry and this includes the number of talented women doing wonders behind the camera.

In no particular order, below are seven female directors doing amazing work in Nollywood:

1. Biodun Stephen

Ever since her debut hit, The Visit, Biodun Stephen has remained consistent in putting out mindblowing films that have earned her applause from Nollywood movie lovers.

Stephen is behind hit movies like Ovy's Voice, All Shades of Wrong, Glimpse and Picture Perfect.

2. Kemi Adetiba

This is yet another prolific Nollywood director whose works need no introduction. Although she started out as a radio presenter, Adetiba began directing music videos before eventually going into Nollywood.

Some of her films include The Wedding Party, and King of Boys.

3. Emem Isong

A Nigerian screenwriter, film producer, and director, Emem Isong has no doubt made a name for herself in the industry.

Some of her directorial works include Ayamma, Apaye, Reload among a host of others.

4. Omoni Oboli

Oboli is one among the many actresses who - having made a name for themselves on TV- have gone behind the camera to create even more magic.

The prolific actress directed the movie, Love is War as well as the comedy film, Moms at War in which she starred.

5. Blessing Effiom Egbe

Writer, producer and director, Blessing Effiom Egbe, is one filmmaker doing great in Nollywood.

The actress and former model is famous for directing and producing the popular Lekki Wives. She is also the writer and producer of the hit movie Two Brides And A Baby.

6. Bolanle Austen-Peters

She is a Nigerian businesswoman and award-winning film and theatre director.

Her film company, BAP Productions has produced various musical including Fela and the Kalakuta Queens. It has also produced several films, including 93 Days and Bling Lagosians.

7. Mildred Okwo

Although her latest film, La Femme Anjola is currently the talk of the town, Okwo is responsible for movies such as The Meeting, 30 Days and Suru L'ere.
