Insecurity: FG competing with bandits to recruit unemployed youths, Tinubu declares

- Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has urged the federal government to recruit five million youths into Nigerian Army

- Tinubu made this known on Monday, March 29, in Kano at a colloquium to mark his 69th birthday.

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has said that Nigeria is competing with bandits to recruit unemployed youths.

TheCable reports that while speaking at the colloquium to mark his 69th birthday on Monday, March 29, the former governor of Lagos also said Nigeria is under-policed while grappling with a high rate of unemployment.

Legit.ng gathered that 33% of the Nigerian youths are unemployed.

He said:

“We are competing with armed robbers and bandits to recruit from the youths who are unemployed; 33 percent unemployed."

The Nation also reports that Tinubu, however, asked the federal government to recruit at least 50 million youths into the Nigerian Army.

The former governor of Lagos state said taking the step would boost Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insecurity.

Tinubu added:

“We are under-policed and we are competing with armed robbers and bandits to recruit from the youths who are unemployed. Recruit 50 million youths into the army and take away from their recruitment source, what they will eat cassava, corn, will grow here."

He said the recruitment process should not emphasise education or literacy but willingness to fight criminals.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly, on Monday, March 29, described Tinubu as one of the blessings God has endowed Nigeria with.

It was reported that Obasa made the declaration in a congratulatory message to Tinubu who clocked 69, describing him as a political mathematician.

He said the APC leader has remained a reference point almost 21 years after leaving office as governor of Lagos state.

The speaker described Tinubu's ability to solve equations with deftness and sagacity has resulted in major successes including the presidential elections of 2015 and 2019 recorded by Nigeria.

He also noted that the APC chieftains' intelligent contributions and advice to the country's government at intervals, especially at periods when solutions are needed to resolve biting national challenges.
