PDP Suffers Huge Loss in Southeast as State Chairman, Party Excos, Others Defect to APC in Ebonyi

Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi state, has defected to the All Progressives Congress.
The Punch reports that Nwebonyi defected to the APC alongside other executive members of his faction from ward to the state levels, as well as other party members.
Legit.ng gathers that the former PDP leaders announced their resignation from the PDP and subsequent defection to the APC on Saturday, March 27, at Pa Ngele Oruta stadium, Abakaliki, The Nation also reported.
Nwebonyi said their decision to join the APC was due to the alleged “undemocratic practices” in the PDP.
Recall that Nwebonyi and other executives of the PDP in Ebonyi state were sacked by the national leadership of the party following Governor David Umahi's defection to the APC in 2020.
The PDP leadership also appointed a caretaker committee led by Elder Fred Udeogu to pilot the affairs of the party in Ebonyi state, in the interim.
However, Nwebonyi and his supporters rejected the dissolution and dragged the party to court. It is expected that their defection will finally put an end to the legal battle.
Receiving Nwebonyi and other defectors, the caretaker chairman of the APC in Ebonyi state, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, thanked them for making a wise decision.
He also urged them to go to their various wards and register with the party.

In another related development, two aides of Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state have resigned their appointments, citing alleged non-payment of salaries.
The aides are Amaechi Oken, a senior technical assistant to the governor and Benjamin Obaji, a technical assistant.
Legit.ng gathers that the former aides have also announced their defection from the APC to the PDP.
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has blasted the National Association of Nigerian Students for endorsing Governor Umahi for the 2023 presidency.
This was disclosed in a statement by the state PDP publicity secretary, Silas Onu.
The party said NANS simply made a mockery of itself by endorsing a man who allegedly had zero empathy for the plight of students.
