Super Eagles Star Alex lwobi Tests Positive for Covid-19, Out of Benin, Lesotho Matches

- Iwobi will also miss the qualifying showdown in Lagos against Lesotho

Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi has tested positive for coronavirus and will out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie against Benin.

Complete Sports are reporting that the Everton of England star returned positive result after Super Eagles players and officials took Covid-19 test on their arrival at Cotonou from Lagos on Friday.

Iwobi, who was expected to be named in the starting line-up will also miss next Tuesday’s home clash against the Crocodiles of Lesotho.

On the other hand, Benin will be without Rodrigue kossi and Jacques Bessan after the duo tested positive for Covid-19.

An official statement is yet to be made by the Benin Football Federation regarding the latest development as the match is just a few hours away from kick-off.

The Squirrels are just a point behind the Super Eagles in Group L and a win over the three-time African champions would ensure qualification before their last game against Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for next year’s AFCON in Cameroon after Lesotho and Sierra Leone played goalless draw.

Nigeria who lead the group with eight points and with two games to spare will now tackle the Squirrels of Benin for pride.

Benin will go into their game against Nigeria in second position with seven points and will need, at least, a draw to also book thier place in the biennal tournament.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Comoros made history after qualifying for the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations staging in Cameroon next year.

The East African country booked its spot in the continental championship earlier this week after playing a 0-0 draw with Kenya at the Stade Omnisports de Malouzini.

As it stands, they are second on the log with nine points after five games - the same as Egypt who are the most successful nation in the history of the tournament with seven titles.
