The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday, March 24, reminded Nigerians of one of its standing policies in an effort to prohibit abuse of hard substances both locally and throughout the world.
On its Twitter page, the agency said citizens will need its clearance when travelling to a set of eight countries, which are often described as source countries.
NDLEA’s director of media and advocacy, Femi Babafemi, stated that the policy which has been in existence for more than 24 years is aimed at discouraging drug trafficking.
In a statement on this, Babafemi said:
“The anti-drug law enforcement agency wishes to state as follows: that the policy was not newly created to impose levies on Nigerians travelling abroad, but has been in existence for over 24 years.
“The policy does not apply to all Nigerians seeking to travel overseas but only those travelling to eight countries usually referred to as source countries."
According to Babafemi, the policy is on the command of the countries which are considered "source", and not that of NDLEA or Nigeria.
He explained further that it is designed as part of global efforts to fight the menace of drug trafficking.
The affected nations are:
1. Thailand
2. Malaysia
3. Indonesia
4. India
5. Brazil
6. Pakistan
7. Philippines
8. Russia.
Meanwhile, the chairman and chief executive officer of the NDLEA, Buba Marwa had recommended integrity drug tests for students and politicians.
Marwa said the recommendation was necessary to ensure that people aspiring for public offices are not involved in drugs.

He made the statement on Wednesday, March 17, at a meeting with the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in Marina, according to a statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Gboyega Akosile.
Marwa said:
