Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has ruled out the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari by the National Assembly over the mounting spate of insecurity in the country.
According to the Yobe-born senator, moving against the president in the National Assembly would not solve the problem.
Lawan made the comment during the finals of a football tournament organised by Istifanus Gyang, a senator representing Plateau North District in the Nigerian Senate.
The Guardian reports that Lawan was, however, represented by Senator Gabriel Suswan from Benue state at the event.

His words:
“Impeaching President Buhari is not the focus of the National Assembly as that may not solve the problem of insecurity in the country. But desperate action is needed by the commander-in-chief to allay the fears of Nigerians.
“What we are facing today requires desperate action by the executive but that is forthcoming.”
“We in the National Assembly have continued to do our best. We have passed motions and resolutions, but most of them have not been respected. The president needs to put the interest of Nigeria above any other.”
Suswam expressed backing for the bill to establish a special commission for armed forces, which recently divided the Senate.
He, however, said that the bill, which seeks to take the power to appoint service chiefs, hire and retire them from the president, was not as crucial as the deployment of troops to take out insurgents terrorising communities.
As the conversation on insecurity continues, Emeritus Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has lamented the debilitating effect of insecurity on Nigeria.
Daily Sun quoted the former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as saying though every citizen had some level of responsibility to redress the parlous situation, political office holders must rise to the occasion.
Legit.ng had earlier reported that Major General Salihi Magashi (rtd), the minister of defence, stated at the event that Nigeria is in a critical situation.
According to the minister, Nigeria's security challenges require the support and collaboration of both civilians and critical stakeholders in the nation.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has assured Nigerians that the country will experience peace again in no distant time.
The military chief made the declaration on Monday, March 22 while delivering his speech at a national defence summit in Abuja.
Irabor said the military would enhance its kinetic operations in dealing with the prevailing security challenges confronting the nation.
