Nigerian Governor Signs Law Ordering 21-Year Jail Term for Anyone guilty of This Offence

- Governor Sanwo-Olu has confirmed that anyone found guilty of cultism will be imprisoned

- This was made known as the governor assented the bill prohibiting activities of unlawful societies on Monday, March 15

The governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed into law a bill approving a 21-year jail term for convicted members of a cult following the ban on activities of cultists and related illegal societies across the state.

The Punch reports that Sanwo-Olu signed the bill for Prohibition of Unlawful Societies and Cultism of 2021 on Monday, March 15, at Banquet Hall in the State House, Alausa.

The new law also stipulates a 15-year jail term for anyone convicted of abetting cultists or anyone who allows his premises to be used by cultists as a meeting place.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos state had suffered the negative effects of unlawful societies and cultism.

It would be recalled that the Lagos House of Assembly passed into law a bill banning the activities of cultists and related illegal societies across the state.

According to a statement sent to Legit.ng, the new law passed on Monday, February 1, stipulates 21-year imprisonment for anyone found guilty of engaging in cult activities.

Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the state assembly, has subsequently directed the clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit the law to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for assent.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that there was a handsome reward for any informant that can lead security agencies to hideouts and training ground of cultists in Ebonyi state, Governor Dave Umahi promised.

Declaring war against cultism and banditry, the governor said the information will be well protected and the reward would be done in secret.
