Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari for financial assistance for their respective states.
The Guardian reports that the governors issued the plea after a marathon 5-hour meeting held in Abuja, the national capital on Thursday, March 11.
Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDPGF), Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, who addressed newsmen after the meeting ended, said the move became necessary to save their states.
Their states, Tambuwal noted, required huge financial commitments that only the federal government can provide.
He said:
"On the general economic well-being of the country, we are appealing to the President to re-consider certain measures, and we are appealing for more relief to Nigerians and support for state governments in the discharge of their mandate, by making resources available to the states, so that we can execute our mandate and ensure good governance in our respective states throughout the country.”
Former senate president, Bukola Saraki hinted at the agenda of the governors' meeting which was held between the governors and his reconciliation committee through a brief announcement on his Twitter account.
