Bruno Fernandes has leapt to the defence of his countryman Cristiano Ronaldo who has been heavily criticised following Juventus’ early exit from the Champions League.
Despite playing 10 men for over an hour, Juve failed to get the needed results for them to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
The Italian press is upset with Cristiano Ronaldo saying he betrayed his teammates following his performance that saw Juventus get knocked out of the Champions League by FC Porto.
Ronaldo is being blamed from left, right and centre for jumping in a ‘wall’ which allowed Sergio Oliviera grabbed his second goal for Porto from a 30-yard freekick.
Porto proceeded to the quarter-final of the competition following the away goals’ rule after it had ended 4-4 on aggregates.
Ronaldo was signed to Juventus after he won three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid, but he has failed to inspire Juve.
Defending his teammate in the national squad, Fernandes told La Gazetta dello Sport via Mirror:
“Ronaldo? Cristiano is one of the greats in the history of football. His mentality inspires those who practice this sport.
"He has won a lot, but no one can win alone.
"I understand that his presence in Juve had created enormous expectations for the Champions League, but when a team loses, they lose as an entire squad, not a single player.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Juventus director Fabio Paratici has made fresh comments over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.
And after the game against Porto, there were questions as regards ageing Ronaldo’s future, but the club director insists he Portuguese striker still has another year on his contract.
Indifferent Zinedine Zidane reacts amid speculation that former Real Madrid Ronaldo is set for return
He said:
“There’s still another year of contract (expiring in June 2022). Cristiano’s contract renewal is not an immediate issue on the agenda, there’s time to talk about it”.
Juve signed Ronaldo from Real Madrid in 2018 to help the club win the Champions League after they had dominated the Serie A for more than a decade.
