Past Nigerian leaders weren’t prepared for power, Kukah declares

A strong allegation has been raised against past Nigerian leaders. The allegations were made by the bishop of Catholic Archdiocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah.
According to the fiery preacher, the country’s presidents since independence came to power without preparing to solve the nation’s challenges.
The Nation reports that he disclosed this during a virtual session moderated by Toyin Falola, a professor of History at the University of Texas in the United States (U.S.A), titled: Cast Without A Plot.

He said:
“President Buhari had already said, after he tried in 2011: ‘I’m done. I’m no longer interested’; Yar’Adua had already said: ‘I’m done. I want to go back to the classroom.’ Obasanjo was brought from prison (to become President).”
He added that the unpreparedness of past leaders limited their ability to plan and “think about how they might resolve the problems of the country”.
Meanwhile, Kukah urged Nigerians to embrace peace and shun ethnic violence adding that nobody stands to gain anything if the country breaks up.
He also said it was not too much for Nigerians to ask the federal government to secure lives and property.
Legit.ng gathered that the bishop noted that government at all levels must provide the enabling environment for citizens to thrive.
In another development, Legit.ng previously reported that Kukah called on religious leaders not to grovel before politicians.
It was reported that he made the plea on Sunday, March 7, during a virtual interview with academic and historian, Toyin Falola, adding that he was worried that religion has become a hostage to the political forces.
