There was a drama on Sunday, March 7, when Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno paid a visit to the Mohammed Goni College of Islamic Legal Studies in Maiduguri, the state capital where Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were being camped.

The camp was where IDPs from the Abadam local government area of northern Borno were being kept following Boko Haram attacks.

Upon the governor's entrance around 1am at midnight, he (Zulum) and his entourage headed to the headcount unit to know the number of households in the camp.

But to his surprise, out of 1000 households in the register, 650 were discovered to be "ghosts", meaning they did not exist.

"450 households were found to be real IDPs after Zulum’s midnight headcount which was conducted by the governor alongside an official of the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), Air Commodore M. T. Abdullahi, and two commissioners (agriculture, and local government and emirate affairs)," an official statement released on the social media page of Borno government read.

Nikky Banks wrote:

"To show how deep corruption is, a governor has to conduct a headcount himself. To discover not 1,2, 50, not even 100 ...650!!!!! 650 ghost households. 650 more families could have been accommodated... The real ones could be better-taken care of but no, greed greed greed."

Chief Adams wrote:

"Zulum you are One in a million and I'm always proud of you because even local government chairman cannot be at IDP camp at 1 am (when you are supposed to be sleeping) but you choose to do so just for the welfare of your people. You're a good example of a selfless leader."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported in a related development that a diligent doctor, Isa Akinbode, who refused to run away from Borno despite the huge insecurity in the area was rewarded for his steadfastness by Governor Babagana Zulum.

Akinbode, a Yoruba doctor who hails from Ogun state in southwest Nigeria, impressed Governor Zulum after refusing to abandon patients amid the high insecurity in the northeast state.

The governor, therefore, approved a handsome N13.9m check for the medical practitioner and also gave him a Toyota Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle valued at several millions of naira itself.
