Father of NAF officer killed in plane crash opens can of worms; says aircraft was 49-year-old

Julius Olawunmi, a father to Olasunkanmi Olawunmi who was one of the seven victims of the recent fatal plane crash in Abuja, has expressed grief over the demise of the late flight sergeant, describing it as "a very great vacuum."
Speaking with The Punch in an interview on Sunday, February 27, the 76-year-old Pa Olawunmi described his son as a "straightforward and decent" whose character "exemplified absolute honesty in all ramifications."
He said the flight sergeant joined the Nigerian Air Force in February 2002. According to him, the circumstance surrounding Olawunmi's death was terrible and disastrous.

On the effect of the Olawumi's death on the family, the father of the deceased said:
"My concern, which is my appeal, is how to take care of his wife and three children. I know I am the father; whatever is done to assist them will be appreciated. Olasunkanmi was one of the breadwinners of the family.
"All the children play different roles, none of them abandoned me. The vacuum created by his death is enormous."
On the circumstance behind the death, he also stressed:
"Again, we can view it from another angle, that the aircraft was 49 years old and was not in a good condition. Some people are even thinking it was a set-up, but what is hidden to man is open to God."

Earlier, the NAF announced the burial arrangement for its seven officers who died in a tragic and unfortunate plane crash in Abuja on Sunday, February 21.
Legit.ng recalls that the military plane, Beechcraft KingAir B350i, crashlanded at the Abuja airport after experiencing an engine failure on its way to Minna, Niger state.
The minister of aviation Hadi Sirika, who first announced the plane crash in a tweet, called for calm but was unsure of the casualties.
NAF said the deceased officers would be buried on Thursday, February 25, at the National Military Cemetry, Umar Musa Ya'adua way in Abuja.
