A diligent doctor, Isa Akinbode, who refused to run away from Borno despite the huge insecurity in the area has been rewarded for his steadfastness by Governor Babagana Zulum.

Akinbode, a Yoruba doctor who hails from Ogun state in southwest Nigeria, impressed Governor Zulum after refusing to abandon patients amid the high insecurity in the northeast state.

The governor, therefore, approved a handsome N13.9m check for the medical practitioner and also gave him a Toyota Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle valued at several millions of naira itself.

A statement posted by the governor on his official Twitter handle @GovBorno explained Akinbode's case further that he graduated from the University of Maiduguri and joined the Borno State Civil Service where he served for 22 years before he retired in 2016 at Monguno General Hospital.

After his retirement, the Akinbode, who was reportedly once abducted and released by Boko Haram in Monguno, remained at the General hospital in Monguno to offer voluntary medical services.

Then-Governor Kashim Shettima, during one of his visits to Monguno, directed officials of the state’s ministry of health to engage Akinbode as a contract staff.

But officials at the state ministry of health in Maiduguri delayed formalizing the doctor’s contract, even though he continued to serve due to bureaucratic procedures.

Zulum has now re-engaged the diligent doctor and paid him his five-year arrears of 13.9m, dating back to 2016 when he retired.
