Madrid were the side asking questions in the early exchanges as Casimero skyed a loose ball from a set-piece into the stands.
Benzema also had his header tipped over the bar by David Soria. The Getafe keeper also prevented Luka Modric from scoring as he made a stop with legs.
Getafe went into the break the happier side as they managed to keep a clean sheet against the defending champions.
Three minutes after the restart Benzema forced another fine save from Soria as the Frenchman took a first-time shot from Marcos Asensio's assist.
The breakthrough finally came through on the hour mark as a pin-point cross from Mendy was headed in by Benzema and Real took a 1-0 lead.
Provider turned goalscorer as Mendy slid into a Marcelo's low cross to double the advantage for Madrid. 2-0 it was.
Los Blancos held on for the 2-0 win and put themselves back into the title chase following back-to-back wins with Huesca and Getafe.
