Breaking: Buhari nominates immediate past service chiefs as non-career ambassadors

- President Buhari has sent the names of non-career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate

- Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retired), the immediate past chief of army staff is one of the nominees

- General Gabriel Olonisakin, former chief of defence staff also made the list

President Muhammadu Buhari has forwarded the names of the immediate past Service Chiefs to the Senate as non-career Ambassadors-Designate.

This was made known on Thursday, February 4, in a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina and sighted by Legit.ng on Facebook.

The nominees are Gen Abayomi G. Olonisakin (Rtd ), Lt Gen Tukur Y. Buratai (Rtd), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (Rtd), and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed S. Usman (Rtd).

The president who forwarded the names in a letter to the Senate president, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, requesting for the nominees to be confirmed.

He urged the Senate to give quick consideration to the nominations for non-career ambassadors.

This development is coming more than a week after the Nigerian leader appointed new service chiefs following the resignation of their predecessors.

President Buhari in a tweet via his official Twitter handle noted that he had accepted the resignation of the service chiefs and their retirement from service.

Buhari names Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to USA

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that President Buhari named Dr. Uzoma Emenike as Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to the United States of America.

Emenike from Abia state is currently the Nigerian Ambassador to Ireland, with concurrent accreditation to Iceland. With her new role, Dr. Emenike will be replaced by Obiezu Chinyerem at the embassy in Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

Buhari writes Senate to confirm 8 appointments

In a related development, Buhari on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, made a crucial replacement of two non-career ambassadors-designate previously appointed by him.

This was contained in a letter directed to the Senate president which he read during the first plenary after the lawmakers' two-month recess.

The replaced nominees are Peter Gana from Niger and Yusuf Mohammed from Yobe state. The president replaced them with Muhammed Manta and Yusufu Yunusa from Niger and Yobe states respectively.
