A report by The Nation indicates that a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, February 1, clashed with members of the police at the party's secretariat in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state.

Legit.ng gathered that the clash was not unconnected with attempts by the Fred Udogu-led faction to take over the secretariat.

According to the newspaper, the PDP secretariat has been under lock and key following the factionalization of the party after Governor David Umahi defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It would be recalled that the state executives of the party including the State Working Committee (SWC) led by Onyekachi Nwebonyi were dissolved after Umahi's departure from the party.

The crisis began when a faction led by Fred Udogu, who was put in charge to oversee the party in the state in the interim, moved to take over the party's secretariat with an alleged injunction.

Members of the faction in their hundreds besieged the building around 10 am but were unfortunately dispersed by security agencies when they arrived.

It was gathered that the operatives with an Armoured Personnel Carrier were firing shots into the air which led to party members running away.

Silas Onu, the publicity secretary of the Udogu faction confirmed that the security agencies arrested some of the members including its youth leader, Obinna Iteshi.

He alleged that the police arrested their members on a spurious claim that the secretariat was being vandalised.

Police takeover Ebonyi PDP secretariat

This incident is coming more than a month after the police took over the party's secretariat in the southeast state.

The police took the action following a court case filed over the state leadership of the party.

Two police vans were stationed in front of the secretariat which is located along the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway. The police reportedly said their action was to forestall break down of law and order.

PDP constitutes new Ebonyi state caretaker committee

In a related development, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP constituted a state caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the party in Ebonyi state in line with the provisions of its constitution.

A statement from Kola Ologbodiyan, the PDP spokesman, said the decision of the NWC is in pursuant to the powers conferred on it by the provisions of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended).
