Governor Bello Matawalle has blamed some traditional rulers in Zamfara for the current spate of insecurity in the state.
The governor said the traditional rulers were sabotaging the government’s efforts at peacemaking.
Premium Times reported that Matawalle made the accusation on Thursday, January 21, at a meeting he held with the heads of security agencies in the state.
He explained that some communities were facing reprisal attacks by bandits because some traditional rulers were aiding the illegal activities of outlawed vigilante groups in their domains.
Matawalle said it was wrong for the head of the Zamfara council of traditional rulers, the Emir of Anka, Attahiru Ahmad, to have asked the government to allow citizens to bear arms for self defence, since the authorities had failed in protecting the citizens.
The governor said:
“It is discouraging to have a respected personality like the state chairman Council of Chiefs to grant an interview with journalists to challenge the efforts of the government and security operatives.”
Matawalle also threatened to expose Nigerian politicians who are happy over the activities of bandits in his state.
Matawalle, who spoke on Thursday, January 21, said armed criminals always attack citizens whenever he is out of the state, Punch reports.
The governor in his speech noted that he will not stop at anything to expose these ill-willed politicians who want his downfall.
