The attitude of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi towards the need for the COVID-19 vaccine in the country is now a cause for worry among his counterparts.
In fact, the chairman of the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF) Governor Kayode Fayemi, has warned Bello not to joke with the lives of citizens in the state.
The Ekiti governor, during a show on Channels TV, described Bello's position as dismissive and dangerous.
Fayemi said that while the Kogi governor has a right to his own opinion on the vaccine, the safety and well-being of his people should be prioritised.
He added that with the fearful situation of the virus in Nigeria, governors are expected to work closely with the federal government to get a lasting solution.
Earlier, Bello had discouraged the use of COVID-19 vaccine. Bello doubted the authenticity of the vaccine.
He was quoted to have claimed that the vaccine wants to be used to introduce a disease that would kill people.
The governor said:
“Vaccines are being produced in less than one year of COVID-19. There is no vaccine yet for HIV, malaria, cancer, headache and for several other diseases that are killing us. They want to use the (COVID-19) vaccines to introduce the disease that will kill you and us. God forbid."
He went down memory lane to the time Pfizer polio vaccines were blamed for the crippling and death of children in Kano, saying, "we have learned our lessons."
The governor said:
“If they say they are taking the vaccines in the public allow them take their vaccines. Don’t say I said you should not take it but if you want to take it open your eyes before you take the vaccines.”
