What perhaps had been the most costly painting theft in the world has been foiled by police authorities in Italy.
In a coordinated swoop and hunt by men of the Agent of the Crimes Against the Heritage Section of the Naples Flying squad, the stolen prized item that went missing in a museum in Naples has now been recovered.
According to a police statement, the artwork was found in an apartment in the city of Naples just as the owner of the property in which the discovery was made has been taken into custody on suspicion of receiving stolen goods.
According to CNN Style the prized painting dubbed the world most expensive painting was modelled after Leonardo da Vinci's popular depiction of Christ which reportedly dates back to the 16th century.
Legit.ng gathered that Giovanni Antonio Muscettola, an envoy and advisor to the then Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, had brought the artwork to Naples after its creation in Rome.
The artwork 'Salvator Mundi' is named after Leonardo's original depiction of Christ that sold for a record N172 billion in New York in 2017.
