INEC fixes Monday, November 6 for Anambra guber

- The next gubernatorial election in Anambra will be held on Monday, November 6

According to the latest update by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the Anambra governorship election will be conducted on Monday, November 6.

This was announced on Tuesday, January 19, by Festus Okoye, INEC's chairman of the information and voter education committee, The Cable reports.

Okoye disclosed that the fixed date is one of the resolutions of the electoral commission during its meeting on Tuesday.

Festus, in a report by Nigerian Tribune, stated that going by the 1999 constitution and electoral act, "...the tenure of the governor of Anambra state will expire on the 17th March 2022 and the earliest date for the election into the office of governor, Anambra State, shall be 18th October 2021 and the latest date for the election shall be 15th February 2022."

The INEC official also disclosed that all political parties should conduct their primaries and settle all disputes not later than Thursday, July 1.

He went to say that flagbearers of the political parties that emerged from primaries are to begin campaigns in August and that the commission will publish a final list of nominated candidates on Thursday, October 7.

Meanwhile, INEC had said the 2023 general election might be hindered due to some of the challenges being faced by the body.

Okoye outlined the problems on Sunday, January 17, in Nasarawa state. Okoye, who spoke during a five-day workshop organised to review the INEC voter education manual ahead of the Anambra governorship election, said the obstacles will hinder free and fair exercise unless being tackled.

Okoye further said the commission is ready to build on its success recorded in the last two years, especially in Edo and Ondo gubernatorial election.
