The defence headquarters has declared that Boko Haram insurgents have been weakened.
According to John Enenche, defence spokesman, the insurgents are “weakened enemies” of the country.
The military boasted that the insurgents no longer have “sovereignty or authority” on any territory in the country unlike in 2015, The Punch reports.
This was disclosed during the event to commemorate the armed forces remembrance day.
He said:
“Boko Haram is much weaker today than in 2015, as attested to by the governor of Borno state on December 6, 2020."
According to Eneche, as of 2015, Boko Haram had between 17 and 20 local government areas under its control.
“Yes, the commander-in-chief is very right by saying that we have a weaker BOKO Haram. Why is it so? In the sense that as at 2015, before they came on board, we had a very terrible situation in the northeast.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that many Nigerians have taken to Twitter to honour frontline troops who are making sacrifices for the country and engaging criminal elements across the country.
The country is marking the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a day set aside to honour the memory of troops who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Comments monitored on Twitter by Legit.ng show that the significance of the day is not lost on Nigerians and they have used the opportunity to pay their respects to the fallen heroes.
Legit.ng also reported that President Muhammadu Buhari promised to reorganise Nigeria's security architecture in 2021.
The president made the promise in his 2021 new year message to Nigerians on Friday, January 1, adding that the security agencies will be trained adequately on how to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups.
In a related development, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai has declared that the Nigerian army will shame and disgrace the Boko Haram and the Islamic States for West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists in 2021.
Buratai gave the assurance at an event held at his hometown in Biu local government area of Borno state late last year.
