NAFDAC raises alarm over fake COVID-19 vaccines in circulation

- As Nigerians look forward to receiving COVID-19 vaccine, NAFDAC has issued an important warning

- The agency's DG, Mojisola Adeyeye, warned that fake COVID-19 vaccines are now in circulation in the country and urged Nigerians to stay away from them

- Adeyeye also disclosed that no COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the country yet

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alarm over the circulation of fake COVID-19 vaccines in Nigeria.

Vanguard reports that the agency also disclosed that it has not approved any vaccines or receive any application from COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers yet.

NAFDAC's director-general, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, cautioned Nigerians against the use of any vaccines without the agency’s approval.

Legit.ng gathers that the NAFDAC boss made this known during a virtual press conference on Friday, January 15.

Adeyeye noted that COVID-19 vaccines are new and the side or adverse effects must be well monitored.

She said:

“There are reports of fake vaccines in Nigeria. NAFDAC is pleading with the public to beware. No COVID Vaccines have been approved by NAFDAC. Fake vaccines can cause COVID-like illnesses or other serious diseases that could kill."

In a similar report filed by The Nation, the NAFDAC boss said no company or corporation in Nigeria should order COVID-19 vaccines without confirmation from the regulatory agency.

Her words:

“Vaccines should not be ordered by any company or corporation. The companies that manufacture the vaccines if they are genuine companies know they have to submit their application to NAFDAC.
“No government establishment or agencies should order COVID vaccines without confirming from NAFDAC if the vaccine has been approved.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari will receive a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on live TV, when it becomes available, to help drive awareness on the vaccine administration among Nigerians.

According to the federal government, Buhari along with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, and other key personnel will be among the first set to receive the vaccine.
