The federal government has disclosed that it has no plan to make any further review of the 774,000 jobs scheme under Special Public Works (SPW).
The minister of mines and steel development, Olamilekan Adegbite, made the disclosure on Monday, January 11, in Abeokuta, Ogun state, Daily Trust reported.
He said the request for review of the programme in line with the population of each local government area of the country cannot be granted.
The minister explained that any additional adjustment made to the scheme might plunge the exercise into fresh controversy.
He said:
“We cannot go into detail on how big are the local governments, these are palliatives.”
He explained that the job was meant to mitigate the effect of COVID-19 on the youths and by extension tackle the unemployment rate in the country.
Meanwhile, the federal government has finally launched the SPW to engage 774,000 itinerant and unskilled workers for a period of 3 months.
This was disclosed by Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and employment on his Twitter handle on Wednesday, January 6.
The successful applicants will be paid a total sum of N60,000 for the period and they’re to perform various community services.
In a related report, Keyamo said the House of Representatives cannot stop the 774,000 jobs initiative.
He made this pronouncement during an interview with Channels TV on Wednesday, January 6.
The minister stated that some lawmakers are trying to twist the arm of President Muhammadu Buhari to put the scheme on hold to their own advantage.
