Buhari congratulates Ohanaeze Ndigbo's new president-general, seeks cooperation for Nigeria

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, January 11, sent a congratulatory message to Professor George Obiozor who has been declared the new president-general of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

In a statement released by presidential aide Garba Shehu, the Nigerian president said he has no doubt that Obiozor's win is well-deserved.

According to the Nigerian leader, the new president-general will serve not only the interest of Ndigbo, but also that of his fatherland.

The president called on Obiozor to use his immense experience as an eminent diplomat to forge greater unity of the country.

Legit.ng recalls that the former Nigerian ambassador emerged president-general in an election held at Dan Anyim stadium in Owerri, the Imo state capital, on Sunday, January 10.

Obiozor polled 304 votes to emerge the winner in the election conducted by the southeast leader's group.

Meanwhile, the election of Obiozor as the president of the apex socio-cultural body in the south-eastern part of Nigeria, is one of the best decisions reached by the leaders of the zone, Tom Ikimi, a former minister has said.

Ikimi, who was minister of external affairs and currently a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said this in his congratulatory message to the Igbo people and the newly elected president.

In the message he personally signed and sighted by Legit.ng, Chief Ikimi expressed optimism that Professor Obiozor would bring his experience to bear on the tasks before him in relation to the advancement of the south-east.

In a related development, PDP congratulated Nigeria's former ambassador to the United States of America, Israel and Cyprus on his election as the president-general of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The party also extolled the leaders and the people of the southeast for successfully electing a new leadership of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization.
