Nigeria’s former Chief of Air Staff, Nsikak Eduok, dies at 73

- A respected retired Nigerian Air Force officer has passed on

- Retired Air Chief Marshall Nsikak Eduok has been declared dead

- He is expected to be buried with full national honours given his role as Nigeria's 12th Chief of Air Staff

Daily Sun is reporting that a former Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Chief Marshall Nsikak Eduok has been declared dead.

Eduok was said to have died on Wednesday night, January 6 in a hospital where he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment. He was aged 73.

Premium Times reports that his relatives confirmed the authenticity of the report via a phone call.

The Late Eduok became the 12th Chief of Army Staff on August 27, 1993, an appointment that was reversed a week later by the then military government.

The Akwa Ibom-born retired officer was reputed to be one of the best-trained combat pilots the Nigerian Air Force has produced.

After his education began working for the Voice of Nigeria for a short while as a studio manager before he enrolled in the NAF.

He obtained his first military exercise from the Nigerian Defence Academy before going for his principal flying training in 1970.

In 1971 after completing his principal training he went through the Basic Flying training course and emerged as the best overall student. In that same year, he was assigned Second Lieutenant.

He was Commanding Officer of NAF Station, Enugu, and the first Commander of the 75th Fighter Squadron.

Meanwhile, the Air Force Council (AFC) on Thursday, November 26, approved the promotion of a total of 107 senior officers to the next higher ranks in the NAF.

The affected senior officers comprise 16 Air Commodores (Air Cdres) who were promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal (AVM), 31 Group Captains (Gp Capts) who were promoted to the rank of Air Cdre, 27 Wing Commanders (Wg Cdrs) promoted to the rank of Gp Capt and 33 Squadron Leaders (Sqn Ldrs) promoted to the rank of Wg Cdr.

Weeks later, the NAF decorated 47 senior officers with the ranks of Air Vice Marshal and Air Commodores.

The newly-promoted officers were decorated by the guest of honour and minister of defence, Major-General Bashir Magashi (rtd) in an event witnessed by a Legit.ng reporter.
