Boko Haram abducts UN aid worker, 50 passengers in Borno

- A UN aid worker has been kidnapped in Borno state

- The abduction was carried out by members of Boko Haram on Saturday, January 2

- The terrorists also kidnapped 50 other persons who were traveling along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road

Without giving a moment of respite to Nigerians even in the festive season, a set of Boko Haram terrorists on Saturday, December 2, unleashed another attack in Borno state.

The insurgents abducted about 50 passengers along the Maiduguri-Damaturu expressway, including a United Nations (UN) aid worker, Abubakar Garba Idris, Vanguard reports.

A security source who spoke with journalists and confirmed the development revealed that the UN captive is a senior protection assistant with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The source added:

“The terrorists ambushed vehicles conveying commuters near Matari village between Minok to Jakana highway. One of them, Alooma was seized around 8:30am."

Meanwhile, the United States (US) embassy had sent a crucial message to the federal government of Nigeria over the abduction of the Kankara schoolboys in Katsina.

In a tweet on Thursday, December 17, the US mission in Nigeria condemned the kidnap of the boys and offered its condolences to the affected families.

The US also expressed deep regret over the security guard killed in the attack on that ill-fated day. It went on to say that schools should be a safe place "where children can learn and thrive."

Moreover, the mission called on the government to do all it can to arrest the perpetrators of this crime.

Its full statement read:

"The United States condemns the violent kidnapping of over 300 boys from the Government Secondary Science School in Kankara, Katsina state on December 11.

"We offer our sincere sympathies to the families of the missing students and the security guard killed in the attack. School should be a safe place where children can learn and thrive.
