As Nigerians celebrate the beginning of a New Year and decade, President Muhammadu Buhari addressed citizens in a nationwide broadcast in the early hours of Friday, January 1.

The president made renewed promises to Nigerians in his live broadcast, acknowledging that 2020 was a very tough year.
In his New Year message, President Buhari pledged that his government will focus on revamping the economy, fight corruption among others. The Nigerian leader also expressed commitment to ensuring that the lives and property of the citizens would be protected.

1. Promise to fight Nigeria's insecurity
The Nigerian leader stressed the need to reorganise the country's security architecture in 2021. According to him, Nigeria will restructure its security apparatus, armed forces and the police with a view to enhancing the capacity of personnel to dismantle both internal and external criminal groups in the country.
2. Commitment to fulfilling demands of Nigerian youths
The Nigerian leader expressed his determination to fulfilling the five demands of Nigerian youths following the #EndSARS protest. He stated that the government has heard and listened to the voices of young people.
3. Nigeria's economy
President Buhari in his speech expressed confidence in revamping the nation's economy through the national economic diversification agenda that supports the primary goal of national food self-sufficiency.
He explained that the current administration is undertaking a series of special interventions designed to boost job creation and support the entrepreneurial drive of youths.
4. War against corruption
The president also stated that Nigeria has recorded substantial gains in its anti-corruption fight, adding that this year, his administration is committed to eradicating corruption.
Buhari explained that the fight would be carried out through collaboration with all the arms of government. While the legislature will enact laws that would strengthen the fight, the president noted that the executive would ensure the diligent and timely prosecution of corruption cases.
He also appealed to the judiciary to ensure that cases are dispensed expeditiously.
5. COVID-19 pandemic
President Buhari highlighted the efforts of his administration in finalising plans to procure and distribute the COVID-19 vaccine to Nigerians.
According to him, the government is committed to keeping the country safe from a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The Nigerian leader urged citizens to observe strict COVID-19 prevention protocols.
