Other than being good at books, Dabo was also an excellent football player at the college. He was part of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program as from 1989 as a walk-on wide receiver. Because of his impressive performances, he received a scholarship.

In his days at the University of Alabama, Dabo was named Academic All-SEC and SEC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll member twice.

His career as a football coach

Upon completing his studies, William joined the Crimson Tide as one of their full-time coaches. His role was to guide the team's wide receivers and tight ends.

Unfortunately, in 2001, the team sacked the then-head coach Mike DuBose plus his backroom staff members. Throughout the 2001 season, he sat out without any coaching responsibilities.

He was offered a job in Birmingham-based AIG Baker Real Estate by his former coach Rich Wingo. He accepted the offer and worked at the company for two years.

In 2003, Tommy Bowden offered him an assistant coach role at Clemson University. He welcomed the new position, but later took over the role of Recruiting Coordinator from Rick Stockstill.

Swinney's debut as a football coach came in 2008. This came following Tommy Bowden's resignation after six games into the season. Dabo became an interim trainer and even though he took over when the team was languishing at 9th position, the team did well to go 3-3 in his first six games in charge.

Dabo was later chosen to be the team's head coach due to his perfect recruiting skills. He beat potential candidates like Vic Koenning, Clemson's defensive coordinator, and Brad Scott, the former South Carolina's head coach.

So far, he has only trained two teams. They include:

  • Alabama Crimson Tide football (as a graduate assistant: 1993 -1995, wide receiver coach: 1996, Tight ends coach: 1997, and as wide receiver coach: 1998-2000).

Dabo Swinney contract

On August 20th, 2017, Dabo penned down what could be described as the largest college football contract ever. He signed an eight-year $54 million contract with Clemson.

According to the contract terms, Dabo Swinney salary was at least $8.25 million during that year's season. His salary would increase to $10 million in 2027.
