Sani Ahmad Yerima, the former governor of Zamfara state, has officially declared his intention to seek the office of the president of the federal republic of Nigeria.
The senator representing Zamfara west senatorial district made the declaration to run on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, December 16, in Abuja, Daily Trust reports.
According to Yerima, his decision to contest the 2023 presidential election was to win and better the lives of Nigerians.
The former governor went on to note that back in 2006, he declared his interest to run after his second term ended but stepped down for President Muhammadu Buhari.
The lawmaker added that since then he has been in the Nigerian Senate for three terms.
Yerima explained that since Buhari is about completing his second term, he decided to try to run for president having voluntarily decided not to go to the upper legislative chamber again.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Yerima challenged the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, and other leaders of the APC, who claimed that the party agreed in 2014 that the south would produce the president in 2023.
The senator said there was no agreement either written or otherwise among founding members of the ruling party for zoning of the presidential ticket

Senator Yarima said he was privy to all the meetings held to form the erstwhile main opposition party and that zoning of the presidency was never an issue.
In a related development, the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was given nods to succeed President Buhari in 2023.
It was reported that Tinubu's staunch supporters and loyalists met in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, on Tuesday, December 15, to launch a presidential campaign movement tagged "The South-West Agenda (SWAGA)" for him.
