Some youths under the Young Christain Forum of Nigerian (NCFN) on Friday, December 11, rejected the recent designation of Nigeria as one of the religious intolerant countries in the world by the government of the United States of America.
YCFN said the assessment by the US government on Nigeria's religious tolerance level was made without recourse to the religious plurality of Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja witnessed by a Legit.ng reporter, the president of the group, Pastor Prince Gideon, said there have never been instances where adherents of the many religious faiths in Nigeria were either hindered or prevented from practicing their faiths.
In addition, Gideon said the Nigerian government has never at any point in time placed restrictions on religious expressions.
He said no individual of Christain or Muslim religion has been prosecuted for practicing his or her faith.
Gideon said that the YCFN would like to remind the US that the Nigerian government has never tried to shut a religious place of worship under any guise.
He further demanded that an apology be tendered to Nigeria and her people by the US government for the blacklist.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that, for the first time in history, the US government blacklisted Nigeria over claims of religious intolerance by her government.
Nigeria is appearing on the blacklist alongside countries like China, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Saudi Arabia from violations against the religious freedom of the people of the country by the government.
A tweet by the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said that Nigeria was added to the list of Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) guilty of egregious violations of religious freedom.
Also, in an immediate reaction to the blacklisting of Nigeria by the US government, the minister of information, culture, and tourism, Lai Mohammed, said that the federal government does not agree with claims made by the US.
