Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has berated the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing it of deepening the crisis in the party.
Wike specifically accused the NWC of causing disunity among PDP governors, a development which he said may jeopardise the opposition party’s prospect of taking over the presidency in 2023.
Legit.ng gathers that a statement released by Wike’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, indicates he made the statement while appearing on a live television programme in Port Harcourt on Friday, December 11.
Governor Wike lamented that instead of taking advantage of the alleged inefficiency and maladministration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the NWC is deepening the crisis in the party.
He said:
“PDP ought to have harvested from the inefficiency of the APC; from the administration (sic) of the APC. Ordinarily, that is what the opposition party ought to do. If you ask me, are Nigerians waiting for a change? Yes.
“If you ask me as a member of PDP, I'm ready to support PDP to takeover, yes. But, if you ask me currently as it is, is the leadership of the party willing for us to harvest this opportunity for a change, I will say no.”
Wike said the NWC as currently constituted was merely interested in retaining the current structure of the party to remain in power, and not to win the 2023 election.
His words:
“The present National Working Committee is not interested or doing anything to take over the realms of government in 2023. When your interest is to remain in power, you are no longer interested to win the election."
However, the Rivers state governor who said he lacked the ability to defect to the APC or any other political party vowed to continue to fight for the survival of the PDP.

Meanwhile, barely six weeks after the governor of Abia state, David Umahi, defected to the ruling APC over the alleged failure of the PDP to zone 2023 presidency to the southeast, Uche Secondus has spoken on zoning arrangement.
Secondus, the national chairman of the PDP, said the party would not be drawn to the politics of zoning its 2023 presidential ticket until the committee set up to review the performance in the 2019 general elections submits its report.
He added that zoning of presidential ticket takes the backstage considering the state of insecurity in the country.
