The House of Representatives has vowed that it will make sure President Muhammadu Buhari keeps his promise to honour its invitation.
The position was made known to journalists on Thursday, December 10, after the plenary in which President Buhari was absent, Punch reports.
Benjamin Kalu, the chairman, House committee on media and public affairs, stated that the president had earlier promised Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker, that he will appear before the lawmakers for dialogue on security issues.
However, Kalu clarified that the president was invited and not summoned, contrary to what many media houses have reported.
He explained:
“When that motion was passed last week, the House was rowdy. It was rowdy because some people wanted the President to be here and others felt otherwise. But the majority of the House, through the mandate of their constituents moved the resolution, even against the position of the speaker.
“The House invited Mr President. There is a difference between compelling and inviting. The ability to resolve this will enable us to know the mood and the intention of the House.
"They were obliged when they had the meeting with Mr President. The President assured them and we believe in the integrity of the words of the President, having shown a commitment to address Nigerians.”
It was reported earlier that President Buhari failed to honour the invitation by the House of Representatives to address them on the security situation in the country.
The president who was expected at the floor of the green chamber did not show up before or even during the commencement of plenary.
Following this, a member of the House, Solomon Bob (from Rivers state) raised a point of order over the president’s refusal to honour the invitation of the House.
