COVID-19: NCDC records more new cases as Lagos loses epicentre status for a day

- There has been a daily increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Nigeria

- The NCDC recorded a whopping 675 new infections on Thursday, December 10

- This is the highest number since June 2020 when the lockdown and safety measures were still serious

- The federal government had earlier warned that they might be a second wave of the deadly coronavirus pandemic in the country very soon

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has continued to record a spike in the number of coronavirus cases across states in the country.

The agency from its tweet announced that the number of new infections for Thursday, December 10, was 675.

This is, according to the NCDC's official records, the highest number of cases recorded so far in about five months.

At the moment, the number of deaths from the pandemic in Nigeria is 1,190, with total confirmed infections now 71,344 and 65,474 recoveries.

Lagos, which has been the epicentre of the virus, came behind the Federal Capital Territory which has 183 cases.

A breakdown of other states and the number of their new cases are given as follows:

Lagos-128, Kaduna-85, Kwara-57, Katsina-50, Plateau-42, Rivers-39, Kano-33, Ondo-21, Ogun-17, Bauchi-10, Sokoto-5, Edo-2, Ekiti-1, Bayelsa-1 and Delta-1.

Meanwhile, the federal government had raised the fears that Nigeria could be entering a second wave in the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, said he had directed isolation and treatment centres in the country to prepare for reopening over the new development.

The minister speaking at a COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, December 10, disclosed that Nigeria may be on the verge of a second wave judging by the increase in the number of confirmed cases in the last few days.
