Coronavirus: Army GOC 6th Division Irefin dies of COVID-19

- Maj-Gen. Johnson Olu Irefin has reportedly died of coronavirus

- Army had earlier cancelled its annual conference on Thursday, December 10, when Irefin who was among the participants tested positive for coronavirus

A report by The Nation indicates that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6th Division, Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Maj-Gen. Johnson Olu Irefin, has reportedly died of complications from the coronavirus pandemic.

Legit.ng gathered that the sudden death of Irefin, who assumed the command of the division in July after replacing Maj.-Gen. Felix Agugo, was said to have thrown the Army into mourning.

According to the report, although the Army public relations officer, Maj. Charles Ekeocha, is yet to confirm the incident, a senior military officer from Abuja reportedly described Irefin's death as shocking.

The Army officer reportedly said:

“One of our fine officers is dead. He is the GOC 6th Division. He died in Abuja after developing complications caused by the coronavirus pandemic.”

Irefin was the immediate-past GOC 81 Division Nigerian Army Lagos before he assumed the command of the 6 Division and land component commander operation Delta Safe, Port Harcourt barracks.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the remaining activities of the ongoing Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2020 were cancelled with immediate effect.

It was reported that this was coming after a senior officer who was in attendance at the programme tested positive for COVID-19 in Abuja.

The acting director of army public relations, Brigadier General Sagir Musa, revealed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday, December 10.

The participants at the conference have been mandated to proceed on self-isolation immediately to prevent any further spread of the deadly virus, in line with the federal government’s protocol for COVID-19.

In a related report, Doyin Okupe called on every Nigerian to endeavour to put on a facemask whenever they are going out as the cases of coronavirus continue to increase in Nigeria and all parts of the world.

Okupe who was a special assistant to former president Olusegun Obasanjo (media and publicity) and senior special assistant to former president Goodluck Jonathan (public affairs), made this call on his Twitter page on Thursday, December 10.
