One of the opposition parties in Nigeria, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), has been hit by the defection as a member of the House of Representatives, Herman Hembe, joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Legit.ng reports that Hembe announced his defection from the APGA to the APC on Tuesday, December 8, during a plenary session.

Reacting to the lawmaker's move to APC, the minority leader of the House, Ndudi Elumelu, described the defection as illegal and asked the speaker to declare the seat of the Benue lawmaker vacant.

Giving his reasons for joining the ruling party in a letter to the speaker and read by the deputy speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase, Hembe said he defected to APC from his ward in August and has since been actively involved in the activities of the governing party.

Hembe, however, lauded the chairman of the caretaker committee of the APC, Mai Mala Buni, former governor of Benue state, Senator George Akume, and former speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, for making his defection possible.

Wase, however, said the fact that Elumelu is not aware of any crisis in APGA is not enough to say there was no crisis in the party.

The deputy speaker noted that the crisis in APGA in Anambra state which is the base of the party is enough reason for anybody to defect.

It was reported that Onyike announced his decision in a statement on Thursday, December 3, in Abakaliki, the state capital, saying he dumped the ruling party in line with unfolding political events in Ebonyi following the defection of Governor Dave Umahi.

The former APC chieftain said he returned back to the PDP because Governor "Umahi is not prepared to turn a new leaf in his leadership style in the governance of Ebonyi state."
