COVID-19: UK authorises Pfizer vaccine for general treatment

- A significant achievement has been made in the effort towards ending the COVID-19 pandemic

- This is as the UK government has approved the use of Pfizer vaccine - being the first in the west

- The vaccine will be rolled out for the general emergency treatment of the coronavirus from next week

Described as a major step towards in the fight against COVID-19, the government of the United Kingdom has authorised the Pfizer COVID vaccine for the treatment of the coronavirus infection, obviously the first of its kind from the west.

The approval was given on Tuesday, December 1, after Pfizer-BioNTech jab, an independent medicines agency, certified the vaccine for general use, Independent UK reports.

According to a statement released on Wednesday morning, December 2, the UK department of health and social care said the government accepted the recommendation for the rolling out of the vaccine next week.

Speaking on the historical achievement, Nadhim Zahawi, the UK newly-elected minister of vaccine, said the approval was granted following "months of rigorous clinical trials."

Zahawi said:

“The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week. The NHS has decades of experience in delivering large scale vaccination programmes and will begin putting their extensive preparations into action to provide care and support to all those eligible for vaccination."

Meanwhile, the Gates Foundation added another $70 million (N26.6 billion) funding for the production and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine.

The donation was made on Thursday, November 12, by the foundation which said it is hoping more donors will follow suit.

There are 52,565,645 global coronavirus cases, 1,291,789 fatalities and 36,764,802 recoveries, with the United States leading the log with 10,708,728 total infections and 27,000 deaths since its outbreak according to Worldometers.
