The 1986 FIFA World Cup winner played for both Boca Juniors and Newell's Old Boys - winning a title for the former before embarking on his European journey.
Before the kickoff, the players from both clubs wore special shirts for a minute's applause around a flag of the icon scattered all around the field.
Daily Mail further reported that all the players had Maradona's name on their shirts while the referee had 'Gracias Diego' written on the back of his shirt.
Meanwhile, the Copa Diego Armando Maradona is the new name for the Argentine league cup, which is a replacement for the league this season.
Roma also paid tributes to their legend who won two Serie A titles for them during his reign at the European club.
Gennaro Gattuso's men had to claim a 4-0 triumph over Roma in their first match after the icon died last week.
And just like the other Italian League matches, the game started with a minute's silence for Maradona, and they stopped the game in the tenth minute for a round of applause.
Napoli also wore a special kit of light blue-and-white-striped shirts reminiscent of Argentina's strip.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described his meeting with legendary Diego Maradona to that of a Pope.
The Argentine god of soccer passed on earlier this week due to suspected heart issues a few days after he was discharged from the hospital.
His death was shocking to the world and tributes have continued to come in as people of different works of life pay their last respect to the World Cup winner.
