Manchester City proceeded to the last 16 of the Champions League for the eighth year in a row after a nervy win over Olympiakos on Wednesday. November 15.
In what proved to be a test of professionalism and discipline, City held on for all three points as Pep Guardiola maintained a perfect record in Group C.
Despite travelling to Greece, it was Olympiakos who looked like the visitors for large parts of the game as City pressed for an opener right from the early stages.
For all their attacking intent, City deservedly took the lead 10 minutes before half time after a nice run of play saw Raheem Sterling cut the ball back for Phil Foden who rifled a low shot past the keeper.
Olympiakos offered very little going forward and their first shots on target came in the 88th minute when City had already organized themselves defensively to secure the 1-0 win.
On City’s end, players simply did not have their shooting boots on as they spunned a number of chances, 22 in total, throughout the game.
Pep Guardiola will however be encouraged by the fact that Sergio Aguero is match fit and the Argentine was brought in late in the game to test his fitness but he also failed to make an impact.
One notable absence from the game was Kevin De Bruyne, who was rested for the trip to Greece, possibly for his involvement in Premier League action.
City’s focus will now shift to trying to win the group and hope to get favorable opponents in the last 16.
Their 10-goal haul in the Champions League so far is as many as they have managed in the Premier League this season in their first eight games, a statistic that exhibits Guardiola’s contrasting fortunes in different competitions this season.
The Citizens face Burnley in their next Premier League game on Saturday, November 28, as they look to bounce back to winning ways.
