Early life
Malam Shehu was born on November 27th, in Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria. His parents are Shehu Kofar Mata and Jummai, who are originally from Kano.
His father was a driver while his mother sold sugar. Mallam Garba Shehu state of origin is Jigawa State in Nigeria.

He attended Dutse primary school in 1970 and then joined Barewa College, from where he obtained his West African Secondary school certificate.
He later on proceeded to Bayero University, Kano, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree. After his graduation, he proceeded for his compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigeria Army School of Education, Ilorin, in 1981.
Career
Shehu Garba started his career as a correspondent at the Nigerian Television Authority, Sokoto, in the year 1982. He then joined Network News Lagos as an Energy Correspondent in 1984.
