Military career
In 1988, Shaggy joined the United States Marine Corps. He was given the Military Occupation Specialty of 0811 Field Artillery Cannon Crewman. He served with a Field Artillery Battery in the 10th Marine Regiment at the time of the Persian Gulf War.
While in the military, lance corporal was the highest rank Shaggy ever attained. However, he was reduced in rank twice. He perfected his signature singing voice while serving in the Marine Corps.

Shaggy musician is happily married to his long-term girlfriend, Rebecca Packer. After dating for 16 years, the duo tied the knot on 12th July 2014. The wedding ceremony was held at Goldeneye in Oracabessa, Jamaica.
