President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, October 19, said that the Nigerian youths have the right to peacefully protest while making demands of their leaders.
In a report by The Nation, Buhari made the disclosure during a meeting with the minister of youths and sports development, Sunday Dare at Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
The Nigerian leader, however, advised the protesters to be wary of unscrupulous elements who would want to hijack their movement to achieve mischief.
The minister quoting Buhari on the ongoing #EndSARS protests revealed the president has vowed to implement reforms he promised.
Dare speaking with State House Correspondents after his meeting with the president also appealed to the protesters to give the government time to address their demands. He went on to add that the team set up has already gone to work.
He said:
“Mr. President said the youths of this country have spoken and he has heard and he has since gone to work for the youths of our country.
“The President promised that he will ensure that the reforms he has promised are met, he will make sure that the reforms are long lasting and that the reforms will deliver for our country a police force that we will be proud of.
“The President said that as far as he is concerned, it’s important to allow the younger generation to exercise the freedom to protest and make sure that such protest is in a peaceful manner."
This development is coming a day after President Buhari held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on the ongoing #EndPoliceBrutality protests.
This was disclosed in a tweet by Bashir Ahmad, a personal assistant on new media to the president, via his verified Twitter handle, @BashirAhmaad on Sunday, October 18.
