Gowon at 86: Buhari salutes former head of state for his contributions to Nigeria

- President Buhari has congratulated retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon as he turns 86 years old on Monday, October 19

- Buhari said in a statement by the presidential spokesman described the former military head of state as a gallant patriot

- The Nigerian leader said the continent draws inspiration from how Gowon handled of the outcome of the civil war

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon on the occasion of his 86th birthday.

Buhari conveyed his heartfelt to his former brother in arms in a statement signed by presidential spokesman Garba Shehu in Abuja on Sunday, October 18.

The Nigerian leader in his goodwill message described Gowon as a gallant patriot, whose commitment to national unity is beyond comparison.

He went on to note that because of Gowon's patriotism, commitment to unity, and humility many young military officers regarded the former head of state as a role model.

While thanking Gowon for leading a very impressive national reconciliation effort at the end of the civil war in order, President Buhari prayed for God to bless him with more good health.

The message read in part:

"General Gowon is one of the fairest leaders I have ever known who has inspired so many future leaders."
"Even in the context of Africa, many leaders in the continent draw inspiration from his adroit handling of the outcome of the civil war through his policy of ‘No Victor, No Vanquished.
"As he marks 86 years of age, Nigerians cannot forget General Gowon's immeasurable contributions to the unity and development of Nigeria."

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Buhari celebrated Abike Dabiri-Erewa's mother, Alhaja Sadiat Abeke Erogbogbo, on her 90th birthday.

The retired teacher and businesswoman clocked a new age on June 7, 2020. In a statement by a presidential aide, Femi Adesina, Buhari felicitated with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the woman, who was known as ‘Kind Teacher’ in the early part of her professional life.
