INEC announces date for 2023 presidential election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the next presidential election will hold on February 18, 2023.
Speaking on Thursday, October 15, the electoral commission's chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made this known while addressing pressmen during a media briefing in Abuja.
Legit.ng gathers that the INEC boss also inaugurated a special Adhoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution.
According to him, the country has 855 days to the next general election, charging members of the House of Representatives to make a swift move on the amendment.

It would be recalled that the president on Tuesday, October 13, nominated Onochie, his special assistant on social media, from Delta state for the INEC job.

The president also nominated Professor Mohammed Sani (Katsina) Professor Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti) and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa state) for the electoral commission's top position.
In a swift reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the development as "provocative, ominous and an attack on the constitution and democratic practices."
Human right lawyer, Femi Falana, also rejected Onochie's nomination, saying the media aide to the president is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a related development, the election tribunal sitting in Benin, Edo state said it has received petitions from five political parties and their candidates, challenging the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki as the winner of the Saturday, September 19 guber election.
Sunday Martins, the spokesperson of the tribunal, made this confirmation in Benin on Monday, October 12, adding that the 21-day period for the submission of petitions ended on Saturday, October 11
